High-Quality Coated Silica Sands

Description

Coated silica sand is a specialized foundry material where silica grains are coated with resin to enhance mold strength, heat resistance, and precision in metal casting. It helps produce high-quality, detailed components with smooth surfaces and fewer defects, commonly used in industries like automotive and aerospace.

Coated silica sand is widely used in the foundry industry for various high-precision casting processes, particularly in the production of cores and molds.

About the Coated Silica Sand

The process of using coated silica sand in the foundry industry involves several key steps, designed to optimize casting quality and efficiency:

  • Sand selection and preparation:High-purity silica sand is chosen for its excellent grain structure and thermal stability.
  • Resin coating application:The silica sand is mixed with a resin binder (typically phenolic or furan) and sometimes a catalyst.
  • Mixing and heating:The coated sand is mixed continuously, ensuring even distribution of the resin.
  • Mold and core creation:The coated sand is placed into patterns or core boxes, where it is compacted and shaped to form the desired mold or core.
  • CastingOnce the molds or cores are prepared, molten metal is poured into the cavity formed by the sand. The coated silica sand withstands the high temperatures of the molten metal, preserving the integrity of the mold.
  • Cooling and shakeout: After the metal solidifies, the castings are allowed to cool. The molds are then broken apart (shakeout) to remove the metal castings.

  • Resin-coated sand: Similar to coated silica sand but may use different types of resins for various casting applications.
  • Green sand: A mixture of silica sand, clay, water, and other additives used for metal casting molds.
  • Ceramic sand: A high-performance alternative to silica sand, offering better thermal resistance for precise castings.
  • Core binders: Chemical compounds used to bind sand particles together in core production.
  • Molding sand additives: Materials like bentonite clay, carbon, or starch to improve mold properties, strength, and surface finish.
  • Chromite sand: A high-heat-resistant sand used for casting high-temperature alloys like steel.
